At the end of November, Emilia had the chance to visit Prof. Martin Witt and give a talk to the group of Prof. Thomas Humell, both working at the Interdisciplinary Center “Smell & Taste”, University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus in Dresden. The institute is a reference centre for the EU on smell and taste.
Emilia had the chance to talk to specialists in the topic and understand better the intricacies of the human senses. She hopes that this new knowledge will help her make the electronic tongues more bioinspired and give them a better generalisation ability. She visited the labs and saw how the smell and taste are evaluated in humans. Thanks to Prof. Witt she had a private anatomy class of the human head and could personally check where it would be possible to connect an electronic tongue if it would be made into a prosthetic.
She also discussed how Prof. Hummel’s group tackles the problem of creating an olfactory prosthetic in their EU grant. In the end, she showed the Sensor Array group’s work and discussed possible collaboration topics.
This was an unforgettable experience, and not only because of the morgue visit.
Many thanks for the invitation!
Emilia’s visit was financed from the National Science Centre NCN Sonata grant no. 2020/39/D/ST4/02256
